Joseph Campbell on Reincarnation

Joseph Campbell, was the world’s foremost authority on mythology, a preeminent scholar, writer, and teacher, and his works had a lasting and profound effect on millions. Many of us came to know Joseph Campbell when the PBS television series of six interviews of him by Bill Moyers aired.

For those not familiar with Joseph Campbell’s mythological writings or teachings may be familiar with this well known quote of his, one of my favorites:

“Follow your bliss!”

In The Power of Myth book, with transcripts of the interviews, in the chapter, The Journey Inward, Bill Moyers asks, “And what does the idea of reincarnation suggest?”

Joseph Campbell replies, “It suggests that you are more than you think you are. There are dimensions of your being and a potential for realization and consciousness that are not included in your concept of yourself. Your life is much deeper and broader than you conceive it to be here. What you are living is but a fractional inkling of what is really within you, what gives you life, breadth, and depth. But you can live in terms of that depth. And when you experience it, you suddenly see that all the religions are talking of that.”

He had so much to say that it is difficult to share only a small portion of his words. This is also another of my favortie quotes of his, and it has been valuable in my life several times: “We must be willing to get rid of the life we planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.”

Campbell began his teaching career at Sara Lawrence College in 1934 and taught there for nearly forty years. He died in 1987, at the age of eighty-three. Two of his classics are The Hero With a Thousand Faces and The Masks of the Gods.

The Bridge Across

Margaret, an elderly woman who has since passed on, was an extended family member. Her entire family had always been very active within the Catholic Church – one sister was a nun, a brother engaged in missionary work and she herself was a very devout Catholic. She related an experience involving her mother on her deathbed. After sitting beside her mother for hours, praying and reciting the rosary, Margaret had moved to sit at the foot of the bed and shortly thereafter, her mother died. At that moment, she experienced a strong aroma of roses in the room and she was startled to discover, along with the rosary clasped in her hand, were her mother's wedding rings. She never understood how those rings got into her hand but she accepted it as a Divine experience.

I’m not sure I can explain how the wedding rings ended in Margaret's hand with the rosary, except by Divine intervention. The fragrant aroma such as that of roses, or other strong, familiar scents is a common experience which many have. Often the loved one’s favorite perfume, after-shave, or flowers may fill the room.

Today Anderson Cooper had a special show with best-selling author and medium John Edward. It was the best I have seen of a TV program with John sharing his gift. (other than his own TV shows). It was so nice to see mediumship presented by one of the best, on a network show without the need to bring in the debunkers as part of the show. The energy there with Anderson, his mother Gloria Vanderbilt, John, and the audience was relaxed, humorous, and emotional.

Anderson’s new daily talk show “Anderson” is very good.

Nancy over at Life in the Second Half Blog wrote an excellent blog about "Living Fearlessly." Her blogs are always good and informative and often deal with current topics.

And today's topic was Vitamins--and Fear. I myself, wrote comments the other day on FB about an article that claims vitamins are no longer good for us. Following the publication of the supposed study, the next day another article came out about men, their prostates, Vitamin E, and cancer. Not curing cancer but causing it! Upping the risk of getting cancer, instead of the Vitamin E being beneficial...May help the heart but gives you cancer. When I read these article my thoughts were how contrived this all is. The pharmaceutical companies and the FDA have apparently for some time been aiming an attack at over the counter supplements, nature supplements and vitamins. In the U.S. alone, sales of nutritional supplements are more than 23 Billion Dollars a year.

These reversals on the use of beneficial supplements seems to be so prevalent any more and I believe it is one way to generate fear and take away our choices. And guess who will fill the void--the pharmaceutical companies. They will come up with something to replace nutritional supplements and will spend some of their 90 billions of dollars with TV and print ads, telling us how wonderful their product is, and then if you listen or read carefully, it will also tell you how many ways it may harm or kill you. But that is to be expected, of course....

But Nancy also posted an inspirational and incredible interview with Anita Moorjani, a woman who had 4 stage lymphoma cancer, was in a coma, hours away from death, and she had a Near Death Experience, and during that time she came into the awarness that we are one with the universe, with the God energy. She came through the near-death experience healed. Her tumors had reduced and then were soon gone. She is coming out with a new book in March, Intrduction by Wayne Dyer.

The youtube Interview is long but so worth it. Take a little time away for the fear generated by our media, politicians, and government agencies, and listen to what Anita has to say about her experience, fear, life's purpose, and unconditional love.

Much of what she experienced is what Dr. James Martin Peebles, spirit guide, teaches with his spiritual psychology: illusion of separation, fear, creating our reality, etc. Her awareness of her healng is fascinating. She came back from the other side knowing her purpose to be here.

Healing Grief

I am often asked to recommend books on grief, usually because people know I have written about the journey through grief and about communication with the other side.

Grief is a personal journey, but it is a universal walk filled with emotions, pain, questions, fears, and is a journey most people are forced to take at various times throughout their lives. I have hoped to present in my spiritual writings not only my own spiritual experiences, but those of others in hopes of lending credibility to the belief that consciousness survives the death of the physical body.

Grief may take many forms. As we go through it, we discover that it comes in all shapes and sizes and is capable of doing many things. It will attack us when least expected, may devastate us, immobilize us, shock us, bring up guilt feelings, keep us awake at night, drain us, make us angry, fill us with regret, make us think we are a little crazy, encourage us to withdraw, bring up many fears, make us forgetful, confuse us, bring deep sorrow, tempt us to lose faith. It can also persuade us to lash out at God, question the purpose of our life, depress us, try to take away meaning, make us feel hopeless, make us insecure, discourage us from moving through it, make us reluctant to speak about our feelings, intensify our sexual feelings when we do not want to even think about sex, make us feel powerless, makes us believe we are winning the battle before hurling us backward three steps–and overwhelm us in a variety of other ways.

Grief will have its way with you and me, but we can also learn from it and discover that we can take from it strength, new understandings, courage, peace, contentment, joy, deeper faith, love, empathy, spiritual enlightenment, honesty, deeper and more meaningful relationships, healing, growth, creativity, among many other things.

Grief can come not only from the loss of a loved one, but from the loss of a pet, a divorce, a job, a home, financial loss, relationship challenges, and each of those experiences can bring pain and sorrow, and may require time to emotionally heal.

Gloria Vanderbilt and son, Anderson Cooper

Today on Anderson Cooper’s new talk show, he had on his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, now 87 years of age. I love Anderson Cooper; love his compassion, his humor, and I see how he got a lot of those traits from his mother. It was a good show.

They discussed the suicide of Anderson’s brother in 1988 at the age of 23. (He fell from a 13 story balcony, his mother unable to stop him.) Anderson mentioned how difficult it is facing life’s tragedies, and asked his Mom to share how to survive loss. This is what she said:

Twenty-Four Years Later, To Dance With Angels

A new edition of our book, To Dance With Angels, is now in Kindle and in print. I have written an Introduction for this new edition. The book was first published in hardcover in 1990, then in tradepaper, paperback, and again in tradepaper. I regained my rights recently, and this is the new edition, twenty-four years after we first wrote the book.

Twenty-four Years Later

It is often difficult for me to realize that it has been twenty-one years since To Dance With Angels was first published. Our book was written in 1987 and we celebrated the hardcover publication in August of 1990.

Over these nearly twenty-five years, some things have changed, some have not. Life is never static, although we often think of it in that way. Time moves on, and change takes place. The wise Dr. Peebles, who you will learn a lot about in our book, often told us from his home on the spirit side that change is inevitable and much of the pain we experience in life may be because we resist change instead of embracing it and allowing ourselves to flow with it. He also tells us that embracing change is what spiritual growth is all about.

I write this now with my husband, Don Pendleton no longer at my side in a physical sense, but still very much a part of my life. Don passed on to the other side in October, 1995. He now dances alongside Dr. Peebles, and I’m sure they often get together and kick up their heels in joy! My connection to Don has not been broken. I am even more convinced than ever that consciousness survives the shedding of the physical body.

Thomas Jacobson retired from his spiritual work with Dr. Peebles a few years ago, but two of his students, Summer Bacon and Athena Demetrios have each, for a number of years, carried on Dr. Peebles’ communication with us here on this side of the veil through their channeling and mediumship. We wrote about both Summer and Athena in our book.

James Martin Peebles was born in Vermont in 1822, and died in Los Angeles, days short of his one-hundredth birthday. While writing about Dr. Peebles’ spiritual psychology I became fascinated with his terrestrial life. He was a teacher, clergyman, physician, prolific author, world traveler and lecturer, a leader in the worldwide Spiritualist movement of the 19th century and was himself, a medium. Throughout his life he was surrounded by what he called his "band of angels," and often received communication, inspiration, and guidance from them.

He was active in anti-slavery, temperance, and women's suffrage movements; a member of the American Indian Peace Commission; a delegate to several international peace commissions; and was appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant to serve as Consul to Turkey in 1869.

In 2000, I published Three Principles of Angelic Wisdom, a follow-up to this book. The e-book edition of Three Principles of Angelic Wisdom was chosen as an EPPIE Nonfiction Finalist in 2002, awarded for excellence in electronic books. I enjoyed writing the book with Dr. Peebles and having the opportunity to delve more into his terrestrial life and the parallels between his long life on Earth and his life now on the other side.

The response we have received from readers of To Dance With Angels over the years has been very heartwarming. Apparently, for many, not only was the book inspirational, but also life-changing.

Enjoy the angelic wit, wisdom, and love of Dr. James Martin Peebles as the veil between worlds is parted within these pages. The Bridge Across

In our book, Whispers From the Soul, the Divine Dance of Consciousness, Don and I wrote about the spiritual experiences of a man we called "David," and I share it here with you:

"THE BRIDGE ACROSS
We met a most absorbing man a few years ago, who here we will identify only as David. He served in Korea as a combat medic then entered the seminary following the war, became an alcoholic, and later was a leader in the Alcoholics Anonymous Twelve-Step Program. He is an unusual man in many ways but we were particularly moved by his wartime experiences in Korea, which especially meet the theme of our book. As a young medic in Korea, David had shielded many wounded soldiers with his own body while attending their injuries and carrying them across mine-fields and other combat hazards to sanctuary, often to the point of total exhaustion. During one of those mine-field rescues, in the middle of a snow storm, confused even as to his exact position and the direction of safety as he crawled along with a wounded soldier slung onto his back, he became convinced that his mother's voice was guiding him toward safety. He followed that advice and completed his mission without harm. Even today, all these years later, his face becomes wet with tears as he recounts this story. This young medic's mother had died when he was but nine years old. This was not his only encounter with a guiding hand on the battlefield. Another time, totally emotionally drained and probably on the verge of combat shock, he had staggered to the ground and was just sitting there, unable to continue, when a uniformed stranger paused beside him for a moment to reassure him with a smile and a nod, and said, 'It'll be okay.' The stranger went on his way and somehow that brief encounter with a kindly face amidst all the terror reinvigorated David and gave him the strength to return to his unit and safety. It was not until later that he realized that this 'helping hand' was not dressed like the other soldiers in the area and displayed no recognizable insignia on his uniform. To this day, David believes that he had been given the strength to go on, by an angel."

The Divine Hologram?

In his sensitively insightful book, Earth In The Balance, Vice President Al Gore wrote, “It is my own belief that the image of God can be seen in every corner of creation, even in us, but only faintly. By gathering in the mind's eye all of creation, one can perceive the image of the Creator vividly. Indeed, my understanding of how God is manifest in the world can be best conveyed through the metaphor of the hologram.”

His book is essentially centered around environmental concerns but these issues are crucial to the entire human race. It is particularly striking that he used the hologram as a metaphor which best illustrates his own sense of connection to the eternal.

He went on to state, "If we are made in the image of God, perhaps it is the myriad slight strands from earth's web of life–woven so distinctly into our essence...that reflects the image of God, faintly. By experiencing nature in its fullest–our own and that of all creation–with our senses and with our spiritual imagination, we can glimpse, 'bright shining as the sun,' an infinite image of God."

Long before the advent of supercomputers and holograms, another splendid thinker arrived at similar but much more dramatic conclusions. Dr. Gustaf Strömberg's The Soul of The Universe, was published in 1940 and again in 1948 with additional appendices. His book was endorsed by none other than Einstein himself but it received less than glowing praise from the scientific community per se, perhaps because the book smacked uncomfortably of mysticism done up in scientific garb. Strömberg, an American of Swedish birth, was an astronomer and astrophysicist associated with the Carnegie Institution's Mount Wilson Observatory. His stunning thesis is a prime example of genius unacknowledged in the context of its time.

Perhaps it took an Albert Einstein to recognize it. Einstein's cover blurb for the jacket of the book reads, "Very few men could of their own knowledge present the material as clearly and concisely as he has succeeded in doing." In his native Sweden, Strömberg was highly respected and the flags throughout Sweden were flown at half-mast in observance of his death in 1962.

Here is a brief sample of Strömberg's vision: “Matter and life and consciousness have their "roots" in a world beyond space and time. They emerge into the physical world at certain well defined points or sources from which they expand in the form of guiding fields with space and time properties. Some of the sources can be identified with material particles, and others with the living elements responsible for organization and purposeful activity. Some of them exist in our brain as neurones, and some of them have a very intimate and special association with their ultimate origin. They are the roots of our consciousness and the sources of all our knowledge."

Earlier in his writings, Strömberg had observed: "All our mental characteristics and faculties have their origin in the non-physical world. There lies the origin of our sensations of light and colors, and of sound and music. There is the origin of our feelings and emotions, and of our will and our thoughts. There is the source of our feelings of satisfaction and bliss, and of guilt and remorse. Our nerve cells seem to be the links which connect our physical brain with the world in which our consciousness is rooted. At death our "brain field," which during our life determined the structure and functions of our brain and nervous system, is not destroyed. Like other living fields it contracts and disappears at death, apparently falling back to the level of its origin. All our memories are indelibly "engraved" in this field, and after our death, when our mind is no longer blocked by inert matter, we can probably recall them all, even those of which we were never consciously aware during our organic life."

It is interesting to see how both the scientific and philosophical points of view today seem to be moving toward complimentary conclusions about the universe and man's place in it with much more coherence than ever noted before. Many brilliant thinkers, poets, philosophers, medical doctors, physicists and scholars are all bringing forward a sharper focus on the nature of reality. Side by side with science, we have had this quieter explosion of spiritual investigation and discovery.

During the years since the first wide exposure to past-life philosophies, a virtual sub-culture has developed intimately involving medical practitioners and researchers, therapists and scientists, who have begun to strongly legitimize reincarnationist thought in the Western world.

Not long after Edgar Cayce's work gained worldwide interest, Morey Bernstein's The Search For Bridey Murphy became an international best seller and enthralled several continents with its publication in 1956. This past-life study has become a classic and opened doors within minds everywhere which had been closely sealed by both science and Western religion.

Bridey Murphy was a woman who was reportedly born in Cork, Ireland in 1798 and died in Belfast in 1864, at the age of sixty-six, later born again in Iowa in 1923 as Ruth Mills whose married name was Simmons. Under regression techniques employed by hypnotist Morey Bernstein, Ruth Simmons (as Bernstein identified her), a Colorado housewife, was able to recall events of past earth lives as Bridey Murphy and a short life as an infant in New Amsterdam, which was later to become known as New York. Bernstein's interest in reincarnation and hypnosis was inspired by his studies of Edgar Cayce and had spent time with the A.R.E. in Virginia Beach. He was therefore delighted to find an excellent subject, capable of deep trance states, when he met Ruth Simmons. His book, which recounts in great detail his sessions with Mrs. Simmons, has been hailed by researchers as one of the most thoroughly documented cases ever developed. At the urging of Bernstein's editor, an independent investigation was conducted in Ireland which established the historical validity of many of the facts related by Bridey Murphy while Ruth Simmons was in trance.

A Chicago newspaper ran a highly unfavorable story about the case. Professor C. J. Ducasse, an eminent scholar associated with Brown University and a lecturer at the Universities of California, Chicago, Michigan, Columbia and Cornell, rose to the defense of Bernstein and Simmons in his book, A Critical Examination of the Belief in a Life After Death which included an article titled “How the Case of the Search for Bridey Murphy Stands Today.” Ducasse's conclusions totally exonerated Ruth Simmons of any suspicion of fraud and characterized Bernstein as a serious student of hypnosis and reincarnation. Of course, for many who were aware of the newspaper's attack but would be unlikely to read this scholarly defense by Professor Ducasse, the damage had already been done and many no doubt believe, to this day, that the entire Bridey Murphy incident was some sort of a hoax. So much for responsible journalism.

Another highly interesting study of reincarnation is being conducted by Professor of Psychiatry Ian Stevenson, M.D., of the University of Virginia Medical School. He has documented more than two thousand cases of children who have reported past life experiences and his ongoing work has been published by the University of Virginia Press and in numerous medical journals. His Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation has aroused considerable interest around the world and is regarded as almost a textbook by serious students of the subject. The children reported in his studies cover the full range of ethnic backgrounds, about half from European heritage and with strong ties to the Judeo-Christian ethos where reincarnationist ideas are largely alien to the culture. Among the most interesting cases involve very young children who begin speaking in a language foreign to their present environment (xenoglossy) and never encountered during their present lives. Many have very detailed recall of experiences during a previous lifetime even identifying towns or villages, neighborhoods, family members (some still living and verifiable), personalities and mannerisms–and some can even describe their own death in the earlier life.

My newest publication, in Print and Kindle. This is a collection of my articles and various World of Spirit blog posts over the last three years. I would say I decided to be selfish and publish them in these formats to have my own record of my writings. Hopefully, you will enjoy them, also.

Within this book, As Light as a Feather, Spiritual Tidbits to Ponder, Linda Pendleton shares a number of her nonfiction writings, most with a definite underlying theme of spirituality, and even what many may prefer to call new age or new thought. Actually there is nothing “new” about any of it. Linda has enjoyed blogging for several years and uses As Light as a Feather as another avenue to share inspiration and food for thought. She writes of near death experiences, spirit guides, mediumship, angels, reincarnation, UFOs, spirituality, meditation, grief, life after death, spirit communication, and other areas of metaphysics and the paranormal, in such a way as to lend credibility and normalcy to spiritual experiences.

The Stream of Life

The bridges across the flowing stream of eternal life may sometimes be more inferred than apparent–a movement more of soul and heart than of body and mind. Is a piano or violin more real than the melody it produces simply because the instrument may be touched, taken apart and examined while the melody which defines its existence lingers only in the mind once the instrument is silenced? Is a life experience more real only because science may examine it or does a finer essence produce its melodies and define its existence?

This flowing stream which is life in continual expression throughout the universes is both the instrument and the melody, the cause and the effect, the song and the singer. One may not be divorced from the other because it cannot exist without the other. There is a word which is also a sound; it is Om, which simply means, and simply says, I Am–and with that word, that sound, it is said that all there is was created...in the beginning.

Meditation and Communication

We all have spirit guides who work closely with us. Meditation is the opportune time for you to communicate, through visual or auditory efforts. Within the slightly altered state of meditation, you hear messages with somewhat more clarity. Do you recall times when you were caught up in negativity and could have used some spiritual insight to move you more swiftly into the positive? Have you been given spiritual answers from time to time? Within the dream state, do you often feel you leave the body and have a communion, an opportunity for nurturing and uplifting of the soul?

The Loss of a Friend

I lost a dear friend today. So unexpected. I’m still in shock as I know all her family and friends are. I feel the emptiness that her death leaves me with. She was a true friend, the type of friend that we could share any personal thing with the other, and we each understood.

We first met in 1992, and then in 1996 she moved to Sedona where I was living and our friendship grew closer—and then we both, at about the same time, moved back to California eight years ago, and live a few miles apart.

We emotionally supported each other through difficult times--and good times. She often worked for me reading and edited my manuscripts while in process—and did things around my office when it was difficult for me.

She loved, loved, animals and would be happy when she would see a dog or two being walked by their owner. We loved going out for Mexican food. We would cry together when we listened to Susan Boyle sing.

A couple of months ago, she had to put her dog to sleep and just two days ago, her cat. Two days before that we had talked about it being time to put the cat to sleep, something that should have been done before. You know how it is, we hang onto our pets, often much longer than we should. I told her, like my cat, Snickers who I lost last fall, her cat was also telling her it was time to go. She said she knew it was, and would do it on Saturday. She said she was also looking forward to being free. No animals to care for. My thought was that would not last long as she would probably have another before too long.

Tuesday she died. And now she is free.

Too young, with still so much love to give and life to live.

I will miss Anne so much.

Friendship

A friendship
is a special, unique state of being-
an entity readily identified
without resort to vows, spiritual or intellectual,
and without recourse to sacraments,

Peace Within

Love, compassion and understanding has to begin with the individual. We cannot have peace throughout the world unless we first find peace within ourselves and with our neighbors next door. If we cannot achieve that, then there seems to be little hope that we can ever usher in a kinder, wiser, and healthier planet. And there we go with that four letter word again–love, love, love!

Mattie Stepanek, Poet and Peacemaker

Tonight I watched Friday’s Oprah show with Jeni Stepanek, the mother of young Mattie J.T. Stepanek, poet, author, and peacemaker. Mattie died in June 2004, not long before his 14th birthday. Again seeing Mattie brought me tears but also smiles. I have always had a place in my heart for that kid with that warm smile and the twinkle in his eyes. I’ve always been so moved and inspired by the wisdom and love he possessed. If you do not know Mattie’s story, please visit his website and read about him. He came into life with such hardship and he lived with pain and yet he set that aside and lived with joy and hope, and dedicated his life to love and peace.

I have all of Mattie’s Heartsongs poetry books, and his book, Just Peace, A Message of Hope by Mattie J.T. Stepanek, with Jimmy Carter, Edited by Jennifer Smith Stepanek.

I also have Messenger: The Legacy of Mattie J.T. Stepanek and Heartsongs, written by Mattie’s mother, Jeni, and with a Foreword by Maya Angelou. This memoir gives readers intimate details about Mattie’s earliest years through his final days of life.

I believe former President Jimmy Carter said it best at the memorial for Mattie when he said, “since I left the White House, my wife and I have been to more than 120 nations. And we have known kings and queens, and we’ve known presidents and prime ministers, but the most extraordinary person whom I have ever known in my life is Mattie Stepanek.”

Although Jeni has the same disease her four children had, she is carrying on Mattie’s cause of peace in our world.

As Jeni’s book says, Mattie was a Messenger. He was an angel and while here on earth he deeply touched many of us. And I’m sure he is now carrying on his inspiration from the Other Side.

Heaven's a Fairy Tale??

Physicist/Cosmologist Stephen Hawking is at it again. It seems ever so often he denounces God or anything to do with an afterlife. This time he says that there is no heaven or afterlife and that it is a “fairy story.”

He will be giving a talk at the Google Zeitgeist meeting in London, in which he will address the question: "Why are we here?"

The article in the Guardian states he will argue that tiny quantum fluctuations in the very early universe became the seeds from which galaxies, stars, and ultimately human life emerged. He is quoted as saying, "Science predicts that many different kinds of universe will be spontaneously created out of nothing. It is a matter of chance which we are in."

He also states. “I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.”

Sure doesn’t seem like chance or nothing in my opinion. Life is complex and beautiful, and yes, full of mystery and magic. I would have thought as he aged his views of life and death would have broadened. He made a comment of people being afraid of death. It appears those who do believe in an afterlife and believe that consciousness and love lives on after death of the physical body tend to have less fear and even a sense of comfort. And those who believe in God hold the universe and life more sacred than those who do not.

I feel bad for him that he has not found a sense of connection to a higher Universal power. I wrote a previous blog several months ago about his comments then, and in that I quoted what my husband, Don Pendleton wrote nearly 20 years ago about Hawking, in his book, A Search for Meaning From the Surface of a Small Planet:

"Why do I worry for Stephen Hawking? I suppose it is a fear that I have misinterpreted his moving forces, and that what I have characterized above as "unemotional scientific detachment" is in fact an almost passionate desire to live in an alternative universe without God. Contacting ~ Communicating with Spirits

I believe many spiritual experiences could be labeled peak experiences or mystical experiences. And that includes contact with spirit, whether spontaneous or by choice. Any contact or communication with spirits can be awe-inspiring, confirming, healing, unifying. Realizing that one is not alone and that there is a connection to the Divine is empowering. Accepting that we are all spiritual beings, whether in the physical body as a spiritual being, or on the other side as a spiritual being; we are all one and the same.

When we begin to acknowledge that we are connected to one another, to the Divine, we have laid the groundwork to sharpen our higher spiritual sense. We are powerful transmitters and receivers. If we learn to think of communication with spirit as an exchange of energy, a radio signal, or an open telephone line, it becomes a normal event, and there is nothing paranormal about it. I personally like Joseph Campbell's explanation of a peak experience as the moments in our lives when we experience our "relationship to the harmony of being."

First Spiritual Temple, Boston, 1885

Founded by Marcellus Ayer

Marcellus Ayer (1839-1921), a teacher, and successful grocer, loved the concept of Spirit and spiritual communication and considered it a doorway into life’s most amazing mysteries and revelations. He considered Spiritualism a gift to Humanity; not limited to one group, nor limited to simple phenomena. It was a gift for all people, of all faiths and denominations.

In the early 1880’s Ayer received inspiration and messages about establishing a church. It was to be a place:

From which the voice of God and Spirit could speak to all people, from all religious and spiritual backgrounds.

From which both the religious and scientific implications of Spirit phenomena and communication could be examined, free from dogma and prejudice.

From which mediumship would not be used to prove one's religious beliefs.

In which the medium would never surpass the message.

He founded the church in 1883, and on April 9, 1884, the cornerstone for the building to be known as The First Spiritual Temple was laid at the corner of Exeter and Newbury Streets, in the Back Bay section of Boston, Massachusetts. It was a beautiful ceremony, with many people in attendance.

The First Spiritual Temple was dedicated and consecrated on September 26th, 27th, and 28th, 1885. Over 1,200 people filled the sanctuary and walked through the Temple's library, lecture hall, and multitude of classrooms. The church grew until about 1910. Soon after the building was converted into Boston's legendary Exeter Street Theatre.

Marcellus Ayer was an avid proponent of the Suffrage Movement and women's rights. He also devoted his energies to expounding health and hygiene. He was very much involved in pioneer psychical research and worked very closely with the renowned medium, Andrew Jackson Davis.

The church and the Ayer Institute is active today in Brookline, MA. The Ayer Institute is “Dedicated to Understanding The Journey of the Soul and the Gifts of the Spirit.”

Her willingness to speak out against apathy and silence in the early, frightening days of the epidemic and her instinctive sympathy for those in need earned her a place as one of the most influential advocates for people living with HIV in the U.S. and around the world.

A legendary star of stage and screen, Elizabeth Taylor has achieved equal fame for her humanitarian commitment to the fight against HIV/AIDS, which dates from 1984. As she remembers it, “I kept seeing all these news reports on this new disease and kept asking myself why no one was doing anything. And then I realized that I was just like them. I wasn’t doing anything to help.” The opportunity to do so came only too soon, when her long-time friend Rock Hudson died of AIDS. Appalled by both the suffering he experienced and the cruel and gratuitous condemnation that befell so many of those affected by the disease, Ms. Taylor determined to speak out against hypocrisy and discrimination and for compassion and care. As a woman and a mother, her voice touched millions of hearts and minds. Indeed, for many Americans, it was Elizabeth Taylor who brought the issue of HIV/AIDS into the mainstream.

"Earth, A Loving and Living Experience of Divine Thought"

This is an excerpt from our Book, To Dance With Angels, in which my husband, Don Pendleton asks the spirit, Dr. James Martin Peebles, channeled by trance-medium Thomas Jacobson, this question. (To Dance With Angels will be available soon in ebook format, Kindle and Smashword).

DON: It has been suggested by some modern thinkers—especially people in the earth sciences —that the Earth and its biosphere is, in their view, like a single entity, sort of a living system in which each constituent of that system is intimately responsive and, uh, interactive with the whole. Sounds good to me. Could you comment on that and perhaps relate it to the entire universe as a larger entity of somewhat the same nature?

DR. PEEBLES: Yes; it is what we call synchronicity and the oneness of the universe. In the Earth or in the universe or in the microbe or in the nucleus there is movement, there is motion. In that motion there is only change. And within that change there is always the return to the source; there is always the recycling, similar, extremely close in precise measurements, extremely close to a perfect circle but not quite; and so thereby becoming a spiral—figuratively, symbolically, and literally by measurement.

This is not only a three-dimensional but four-dimensional phenomenon and even beyond that. The spiral is the source of the greater frequency changes, such as black holes, which goes into the discussion of other dimensions, another reality, another universe; also internal combustion, ah . . . instantaneous or spontaneous combustion of an emotional experience, or a physical experience . . .uh, interdimensional travel, in the form of the spiral.

To resist change is to ignite pain and separation; to surrender and move with, and eventually to pilot change is to become the center of the universe rather than the periphery; the creator rather than the victim.

The entire universe is a loving and living experience of divine thought. It is a fabric that is intermeshed with all things. All particles are a part of this—and the science of the next century will not be priding itself on its great diversity, its great specialization, but instead will pride itself on a unified understanding. All the differences that have been found, or so-called discovered in your current century will . . . their source will be found to be common, into oneness, or a unified field, in the century to come.

So it is true that every movement in one part of the universe affects another part of that universe to some infinitesimal degree at least. And you are part of all life around you.

You may have seen Akiane and her incredible art work before when she has appeared on various TV shows. Her talent, which began at a very young age, is quite amazing and inspirational. She considers her talent to be directed by God. Obviously her inspiration not only in her art but in her writings has a strong spiritual essence and message. Her paintings evoke an energy that is pure and loving.

And by the way, I added the word Mystic to her description in the quote above, because from what I have read and heard about Akiane, I would consider her a mystic as she is a visionary and has a connection to the spiritual world.

I define spirituality as a search for love, beauty, happiness and wisdom. Spirituality is a journey that we never finish. It has nothing to do with our levels of development, achievement, awareness or intention.

Both a two year-old and a centenarian might not be wise, happy or altruistic yet highly spiritual. Young children might not be fully aware how spiritual they are, however, without childlike sincerity and purity we cannot even imagine certain touch of holiness.

Hitler, too, tried to create his own version of perfect, healthy and stable society. For many he was an epitome of farsightedness and spirituality. The Pope even blessed Hitler’s army. Was Hitler spiritual? Yes. In his own diabolic and hideous way.

How do we weigh levels of spirituality? Are alternative lifestyles less spiritual than traditional ones? Some people abstain from all intimate relationships, because they believe they have to devote their time to love all mankind in a childlike genuineness. Others form monogamous heterosexual relationships. While others create bonds outside all traditional rules.

From the standpoint of eternity each level of maturity is relative. We are all spiritual, and we are all different. Neither higher, nor lower. Neither farther, nor closer. Neither deeper, nor more shallow. Just uniquely different. Looking at a blossom from a different direction one will see it completely foreign, special, beautiful or revolting depending on where we stand. If the close-up is of a spider attached to the stem, then for those who don’t like spiders the sight will look distasteful. If the image is of a butterfly on a petal the view may appear peaceful to us, but not for a bird hungrily watching the scene.

From the standpoint of our present world we all assign our measurements of preference. Given the choice we will join families and groups based on our interests. We attract those with similar values and ideals. People crave belonging. So whether it is a national, racial, religious, political, educational, vocational or biological identification we try to connect to something familiar and within our comfort zone.

Clear messages of diverse feelings experienced by other people were part of my visionary and extrasensory perception since I was five years of age. I do not condemn any personal choices for intimate relationships. Love is love. I detest only the violence and trauma that any self-centered conduct can cause to others.

Our Unseen Guest, The Finley's Communication with Stephen, 1920

"Between the Bookends:" Christina-Taylor Green (September 11, 2001—January 8, 2011)

Roxanna Green said about her 9 year-old daughter who was gunned down in Tucson Arizona yesterday morning at the Gabrielle Giffords political event, “I just want her memory to live on because was a face of hope, a face of change, faces of us coming together as a country to stop the violence and hatred and the evil words, and for us to bring awareness that there are people out there that have these problems. We have to protect our government officials and innocent young children, people who go there to get involved and make our country a better place.”

According to an article by Stephanie Innes in the Arizona Daily Star today, Christina-Taylor had “already told her parents she wanted to attend Penn State one day and have a career that involved helping those less fortunate than her. She also loved animals and was a passionate dancer who loved ballet, hip-hop, jazz and gymnastics and was the only girl on her Canyon del Oro Little League baseball team, ‘The Pirates.’ She played second base.”

She also loved swimming with 11 year-old brother, Dallas, apparently named after his grandfather.

“Christina-Taylor came from a family of baseball players. Her grandfather, former major-league pitcher Dallas Green, was team manager for the Philadelphia Phillies when they won the World Series in 1980.

"She kept up with everyone, she was a strong girl, a very good athlete and a strong swimmer," said her mother, Roxanna Green. "She was interested in everything. She got a guitar for Christmas so her next thing was learning to play guitar."

“Christina-Taylor also enjoyed singing in a church choir at St. Odilia's Catholic Church, where she had received her first Holy Communion in the spring.”

Her mother said she was very interested in going to the Saturday morning event with a neighbor, a family friend, Susan Hileman, (also a victim of a gunshot wound), because she wanted to learn more about government so she could help out in the future. Christina, a 3rd grader was recently was elected to the school council.

"She was born back east and Sept. 11 affected everyone there, and Christina-Taylor was always very aware of it. She was very patriotic and wearing red, white and blue was really special to her," her mother said. "She was all about helping people, and being involved. It's so tragic. She went to learn today and then someone with so much hatred in their heart took the lives of innocent people."

“Because she was born on Sept. 11 in that year where American history took a sudden and dramatic turn, Christina was among the 9/11 babies featured in a book titled Faces of Hope."

Both President Obama and FBI Director Robert Mueller referenced Christina in remarks about the tragedy.

Her father, John Green stated, “I'm proud of her. That is where she started, President Obama and his campaign is where she started getting interested in politics and at least to have him mention her makes me feel good. She was born on 9/11, so when you look at the bookends of her life, they were pretty tragic, but everything in the middle was the best.”

In the book, The Faces of Hope, apparently the photograph of baby Christiana-Taylor says, "I hope you see rainbows.”

Not only will she see rainbows, she was a beautiful rainbow.

Anne Francis

Anne Francis, known for her acting roles in classic movies such as Bad Day at Black Rock, Forbidden Planet, Blackboard Jungle, and star of the TV program Honey West died Sunday at the age of 80. She won the Golden Globe in 1965 as the Most Popular Female Personality for her role as Honey West, the first female PI in a TV series. The TV series was based a series of detective novels written by G. G. Fickling, pseudonym for Forrest and Gloria Fickling, a husband and wife writing team of the 1950s-60s.

I’ve not read the novels but I thought of the type of sexy detective novels such as those written by my friend Richard S. Prather and his Shell Scott PI series of best selling books of the ’50-60s. And apparently the Ficklings were friends of Prather.

The Honey West character was sexy, and Anne had a sultry look and a distinctive beauty mark she was known for, but she also took on the bad guys with her expertise with a gun and karate. She also had a pet ocelot. The TV series was on for 30 episodes, 1965-66, with Aaron Spelling as Executive Producer.

In 1983, I had the opportunity of seeing Anne Francis at the Santa Barbara’s Writer Conference. It was there that I discovered she had also written a book, a book a lot of people do not know of. I had found her book very interesting, and when I heard of her death Sunday, I pulled the book from my bookshelf. It is called Voices From Home, An Inner Journey and was published in 1982 by Celestial Arts.

Anne Francis writes that her book is not a book about hidden skeletons, and name revealing dalliances but is far more intimate and she calls the book her spiritual expose. On the cover flap she wrote: “It is about our essence of being, the unexplicable reality of mysticism, psychic phenomena, and the inner workings of mind and spirit which contribute to the growth of the invisible and the most important part of us; hidden from the glare of lights and the camera’s eye.”

It really is a fascinating book of unexpected subjects: spirituality, love, contact with the other side, life and death, the mind and energy, creating our lives, and spiritual growth and enlightenment.

I very much enjoyed reading her book, and obviously I still remember it as it immediately came to mind when I heard of her death.

I do hope her daughters, Jane and Margaret, will consider putting their mother’s it back in print and ebook format so it can be shared again.

What I like as 2010 is coming to a close and on the edge of a promise of a new year hopefully filled with happiness, contentment, and health, is taking the time, always about this time of the month or between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, to give. I don’t mean the Christmas gifts for family and friends, but the gifts given to those we may not even know at all.

Today I packed a small box that will go out tomorrow to a Women’s shelter in a nearby city. I made two dozen inspirational bookmarks as that was one thing listed on their Wish List. I enclosed a dozen small notecards, several pair of new crocheted slippers and new pairs of panty hose.

I also gave donations to my favorite charities. I love donating a flock of chickens, a baby goat, or even a share of a pig. Check into Heifer International Organization.

And Feeding America. It was previously called America’s Second Harvest. I like this one a lot, too. The food stays in your local area if you would like.

Others you may want to consider are Clinton Foundation (AIDS and Malaria), Elton John AIDS Foundation, Habitat for Humanity.

These are my favorites.

And who knows, I may end up giving more chicks, ducks, or rabbits, before the year is out. Try it. It may make your heart feel warm like it does mine.

Dolphins and Loving Allowance

A number of years ago, while writing our book, To Dance With Angels, Don and I had a discussion with spirit guide Dr. James Martin Peebles, about the intelligence of animals. Dr. Peebles was being channeled by trance medium, Thomas Jacobson. Here is an excerpt from our book as Don asks Dr. Peebles our question for this particular interview that day.

DON: We have heard you speak to others regarding other intelligent species on Earth—that maybe humans take a little too much pride in that we tend to think of ourselves as the only self-conscious life on the planet. Can we talk about that?

DR. PEEBLES: Yes, well . . . the dolphins . . . whales . . .each individual whale and dolphin is a slightly different case, but overall the dolphin is—in the human concept of intelligence, which is limited—the dolphin is close, not quite equal to but close to the human being. However, there are some individual dolphins that are far superior to many or most human beings. More important, perhaps—the teaching of loving allowance is the greatest teaching for the planet Earth—and I'm not speaking of that in terms of addressing or listening to us, this source here—but in any words you want to use, in any language, in any religion, those parts of each religion, those parts of each philosophy that address in some way the concept of loving allowance. That is the lesson and teaching of Earth. And that, in many ways, is why anything comes to the planet Earth to learn, and the greatest teacher of that upon the planet is the dolphin.

The greatest experience of that is the dolphin. Their concept, their experience, as a community is such—they don't really need to change the human being, they just allow the human being and, uh . . . for they know, they have this intelligence that all will be as it will be, according to your growth, your karmic cycles.

So, for example, if a dolphin is captured, the dolphin won't necessarily be ecstatic about that experience, but will quickly surrender and become family with the captor rather than rebel. So the dolphin—not the clown but the teacher of laughter—uh, people walk away from watching the dolphin and they almost believe in God again, uh . . .they have been taught by a great master, although they might call the dolphin a clown.

So the dolphin is a great teacher, and a great experience of allowance—that's okay, it doesn't affect them . . . and so, uh, another is a species that is not accepted by most humans . . . uh, typically called the Yeti. Accepted or not, this is a real life form. They, as well, are extraordinarily gentle creatures and beings, and they, as well, are extremely intelligent and are, uh, teachers of allowance.

From their perspective, as from the dolphin's perspective, the human being is the—in the literal term—can be a vicious beast—uh, to watch and listen to human beings talking about the beasts of the jungle is a little laughable . . . uh, so there are many different and new perspectives to see, for the human mind to see.

Pride in intelligence is perhaps one of the more subtle but consistent barriers to greater love among the civilized arenas of the earth.

DON: We see this also as intellectual arrogance.

DR. PEEBLES: Yes, correct; exactly. Which, of course, is demonstrated and experienced, cultivated inside one because one does not love self. One is afraid that one is not talented, and so a demonstration of intelligence is a technique of “trying to feel better than.” If you feel better than, you might be respected. If you are respected, then you feel loved. But what everyone finds out in their own karmic life cycles is they'll be respected again and again; they'll achieve their goals and become very successful and life will respect them. And then they die lonely. They say, “Wait a minute, I guess maybe respect isn't love, so maybe it was a waste of time trying to be superior,” and so forth.

Pet Loss, It Is Real Grief

I put my cat, Snickers to sleep a few days ago. It was a very difficult decision, and one I had put off for several weeks, wanting to avoid grief. Although I knew I could not avoid grief, I was only partly avoiding grief because I was suffering already, and at times, the way Snickers looked at me, I knew he was suffering grief also. He knew, too, that our time together was about to end. All the years we’ve been together, nearly 14 years, I have insisted he was psychic, so how could I now deny he knew?

I have been treating him for kidney disease for more than three years, and during that time he might stabilize for awhile but in the last couple of months he had gone further down hill, dropping weight constantly, barely eating in the last week or so, and was also anemic. He was fourteen and I had him since he was 7 months old.

Pet loss is as real as the grief we suffer when any loved one dies. I know all about grief, I’ve lived it—I write about it. I also know that the loss of a pet (or any new loss for that matter) can bring to the surface past grief. And I was not ready to go there, until ... I knew he was ready ... and that forced me to be ready. He went peacefully, not putting up any kind of argument. It was time.

So I am in grief. I really miss him. I’m not greeted at the door, nor do I see him sitting at the window of my study as I back my car out of the drive, nor do I have him asking for milk or snacks when I go into the kitchen. I find myself commenting on a TV program out loud expecting him to react to my comment as he always did. Now when I go to bed he does not curl up with me, or when I sleep late I do not have his paw gently touching my face, his way of telling me to wake up. I miss his physical presence and hope to feel more of his spiritual presence as soon as I can move through a little of the aloneness. Right now, the grief is blocking those subtle spiritual connections. I feel that, I know that, but the letting go is still difficult. Maybe in a few days it will be easier.

It’s been a week and a half and the tears still come. Yesterday I began looking at kitties up for adoption at the local humane society. But right now, I don’t dare go there in person. And it is raining today, a good reason to stay right here at home.

I know it would be best if I give myself a little more time to grieve. But it hurts. I knew it would. But I know he is free and healthy again. And this time he can run through the tall grass, chase the birds and butterflies, climb the trees, and do the little things he could not do while living in my home. That day when we said our goodbyes, I told him it would be like that for him. And those words of mine calmed him as I held him and I believe gave him comfort and peace.

If you go through grief from the loss of your pet, don’t let anyone tell you: “Oh, what’s the matter with you? It’s just a cat.”—“It’s just a dog.” Obviously and sadly, the person who would say that to you does not understand love, let alone, understand unconditional love.

Today, 15 years ago, my husband, Don Pendleton died. I asked him to greet Snickers (whom he did not know in the physical), and I am sure he did, not only for me, but for Snickers. That is what love is all about.

Peace For Our World, Mattie Stepanek

Young poet, philosopher and peacemaker, Mattie J.T. Stepanek (1990-2004) wrote this poem following 9-11-2001. Even today his words have such strength, meaning, and inspiration, for living peacefully and with respect for all others. It is reminder for today's attitudes about acceptance, diversity, equality, and events of bullying (cyber and otherwise), hate crimes, as well as terrorists acts.

Mattie was a wise and beautiful soul, so far beyond his years. He published his inspirational poetry and essays and you will find them in his HEARTSONGS series of books, and in JUST PEACE: A Message of Love, cowritten with former President Jimmy Carter. His mother, Jeni Stepanek's book, MESSENGER: The Legacy of Mattie J.T. Stepanek and Heartsongs, (Forword by Dr. Maya Angelou) is now available in paperback, and also Kindle.

Nancy at Life in the Second Half Blog has an interesting post today (actually all her posts are interesting and inspirational if you do not already know that) Her post is on Greg Braden and his video series The Science of Miracles.

Although I've never read any of Greg Braden's books, I have heard him interviewed often on Coast to Coast AM Radio and have watched videos. He marries science and spirituality in an inspirational and enlightening way.

As Nancy writes: "Greg Braden takes complex material related to science and spirituality and puts into an easy-to-understand format. Reiterating the importance of prayer and positive, peaceful thoughts, this series has much to offer. There are seven parts, between five and ten minutes each. If you choose to watch some or all of it, please let me know what you think."

Norweigen and Danish Textbook UFO Article

Today I had a request for permission to use an article of mine in a Denmark school textbook, in print format, and also as an electronic interactive book. The article of my UFO sighting has been included in a Norwegian 8th thru 10th grade textbook, Crossroads 8 written by Halvor Heger, since 2006.

The Crossroads textbook is in English and is used to teach English to the Norwegian students. I found that Halvor put together an interesting book for his students and I was pleased to be included, and in the same section of the book as former President Jimmy Carter's UFO experience. The new Danish textbook editions will be published in early 2011.

Who are the extraterrestrials? Are we alone? I think not, as does Dr. Steven Greer.

Steven M. Greer, M.D., has been working on his Disclosure project for several years. His talk here in this video is excellent--informative, credible, and humorous. His talk is long but well worth listening to!

My friend Thomas Jacobson brought this to my attention yesterday. Thomas has done spiritual and mediumistic work for many years, and was the trance medium who channeled Dr. James M. Peebles for the interviews Don and I did for our book, To Dance With Angels. (thanks, Thomas)

I have been aware of Dr. Greer for a number of years as he is a frequent guest on Coast to Coast AM Radio show with George Noory. But I was not aware of this video of his talk in Barcelona last year.

Thomas commented, "Among other things, a most fascinating experiment and procedure that his [Dr. Greer] team uses to purportedly achieve communication/response from the ETs."

Dr. Greer not only goes into his discussions and disclosures with President Clinton but also more recently with President Obama. It sure appears our presidents' hands are tied in being able to disclose the truth of the extraterrestrials.

I guess my major concern is WHO is tying their hands.... and it has appeared, the hands of other world leaders. And how can those WHOEVER have so much control? Darn right scary! I don't mean the extraterrestrials are scary—but the persons who have control of keeping this information away from us!

CA Gay Marriages Return

Love and equality wins out, at least for now. About time.

The Judge rules to lift the ban on gay marriage and gay marriages in CA can resume on August 18.

Our Former Governor and now Attorney General (and current candidate for Governor), Jerry Brown, who has considered Prop 8 unconstitutional as many of us have, today quoted the words of Frances Wright, a leading feminist of the 19th Century (1795-1852):

"Equality is the soul of liberty; there is, in fact, no liberty without it."

Why is it so difficult for people to get that? And why, in a country founded on religious freedoms, why does religion even have a say in someone's choice of love and matrimony?

It will be so nice when we can get beyond these biases and accept diversity, and allow equality not only for ourself but for everyone--no matter race, religion or sexual identity.

It seems time for our country to catch up with the rest of the world.

Miracles, Big and Small

Today I was formatting my book, A Walk Through Grief: Crossing the Bridge Between Worlds for ebook publication in addition to print and Kindle, and wanted to share this.

Possibly you have experienced something similar, but if not, I do hope you are open to the possibility of experiencing this sort of thing. This is from my Chapter 9, Miracles, Big and Small:

If we can accept the fact that life does not end at death and that our loved ones are still around us then it should be easy to believe that from time to time we can experience communication with them and from them. That communication may come through to us if we are open to receive it and believe that it could occur. It may come in subtle ways, or it may be profound, we may have healthy skepticism, or we may deny that an unmistakable event has occurred right before our eyes.

Just recently I had the opportunity to spend the afternoon with a woman I had met about two years ago, several months following her husband's death. We had not seen or spoken to each other since that last visit. This time, we had the commonality of widowhood to discuss. As we talked and exchanged experiences, she told me she had asked her late husband for a sign that he was still around her. She asked him to give her one red rose. She dared him to do it and she set up a deadline. She had to have the rose by the following Thursday at midnight. That particular Thursday afternoon came and she received an unexpected package in the mail from one of her dear women friends with whom she had not discussed her challenge to her deceased husband. Inside the package was a pretty blouse and lying on top of it were two dried red roses. She laughed and said, "See, he couldn't do it. I didn't want two roses, I asked for one."

It was my turn to laugh. "He sent you two roses. He showed you he could do it and do one better."

"But I only wanted one rose," she insisted. We both had a good laugh.

A recent Time magazine poll reported that 69% of people believe in miracles. But how do we classify a miracle? Does it have to be a profound event such as the Virgin Mary appearing to the children of Medjugorje?–or could it be our deceased grandmother standing at the foot of our bed? Is it an extraordinary healing or mysterious warning voice that calls out and saves us from disaster? Could it be the tears flowing from a religious statue or is it a little two year old boy who says he has been playing with his deceased grandfather? Is it the appearance of a guardian angel at a time of deep depression or could it be the warm hand on our shoulder when no one is around?

Or, could a miracle be two red roses?

If we are not open to receiving a miracle in whatever form it comes to us we may miss it. Albert Einstein said, "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as if everything is."

So, as Einstein told us, the choice in how we perceive our world is ours, and ours alone. Miracles may come to us in many guises, in subtle ways, without a marching band announcing their arrival, through prayer, without demand, with just a glimpse, when most needed, through epiphany, at a moment of meditation, with the helping hand of a stranger, with the cry of a newborn infant, or with the wrinkled hand that reaches for one last touch, with the flower that bursts forth revealing its beauty, and with every beat of our heart and every breath we take. Life is a miracle. Each one of us is a miracle. The world is filled with miracles, tiny ones, big ones, incredible ones, profound ones but never, ever, insignificant. CA Prop 8 Ruled Unconstitutional

Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker overturns CA Gay Marriage Ban, with some strong language, ruling "Proposition 8 is unconstitutional under both the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses."

The Court's Conclusion:

"Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license. Indeed, the evidence shows Proposition 8 does nothing more than enshrine in the California Constitution the notion that opposite sex couples are superior to same-sex couples. Because California has no interest in discriminating against gay men and lesbians, and because Proposition 8 prevents California from fulfilling its constitutional obligation to provide marriages on an equal basis, the court concludes that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional."

This is good news that we are moving ahead in having equality for all. This Federal Court decision is being called an historic decision and although the ruling will likely be appealed it is really beside the point, as gains have been made. It was shocking to many of us Californians, young and old, that Prop 8 even passed, but many say we can thank the Mormon Church for that television ad campaign that aired several times a day with false information.

I just read a poll released by the Public Religion Research Institute and the results show that Prop 8 would not pass today ... so there seems to be hope that gays and lesbians will have their equal treatment in our country in the near future. I have also found it rather interesting that East Coast states and Iowa have been more progressive than the West...CA....in allowing gay marriages. Even many other countries are ahead of us in this regard.

It could be so nice when citizens of our country can dissolve prejudices and biases in all areas of life: race, culture, sexuality, and religion. Our social climate is changing but we do have a ways to go.

The two excellent lead attorneys for the gay couples were Ted Olson and David Boies, who were on opposite sides of a legal battle between George W. Bush and Al Gore over the results of the 2000 presidential election but joined forces in representing the plaintiffs in this lawsuit. Kind of ironic, huh? Yet, when I first heard they were on the case I was optimistic.

In May of 2009, Ted Olson stated, "We are two lawyers from opposite ends of the political spectrum who have come together to support one of the most important issues of our time,...it is not about liberal or conservative, Democrat or Republican. We're here in part to symbolize that."

And at that time David Boies said, "Our Constitution guarantees every American the right to be treated equally under the law. There is no right more fundamental than the right to marry the person you love and to raise a family."

I came across an article in The DENVER POST written by Joanne Ostrow about psychics, mediums and other paranormal events that have become common place on our television and movie screens.

Ostrow wrote, “Between-world spirits, reincarnated beings and plain old dead folks are casting shadows all over the network schedules. It's a good time to be a ghost on TV.

Psychics, mediums and other ghost whisperers have found a place in the public imagination. Procedural dramas increasingly rely on that extra dimension for a plot boost. These days, it's not enough to bring good detective skills to the table. Clever crime solvers need a direct line to the great beyond, too.

What does this say about the cultural moment? Why is the medium overrun with mediums?”

Within the article she quotes Stuart Fischoff, professor of psychology at California State University and Los Angeles bureau chief for Psychology Today, in regards to this interest in the paranormal. He stated, “It's in our DNA. The questioning of the unknown, it's what the ideas of God and Mother Nature are all about. To help explain the unexplainable. These (paranormal ideas) are being exploited by entertainment, not created by entertainment."

Well said. I agree that the increased interest in the paranormal is innate within mankind--communication with angels, spirit guides, and loved ones, along with channeling, psychic readings, and all, has always taken place in our American culture and in most all others. I believe the escalation in acceptance of the phenomena may be because we now have “permission” to talk about it as we see it nightly in our homes, in our theaters, and read it in our books, and on the Internet.

I have been saying for some time now, with television presenting shows such as those of mediums John Edward, James Van Praagh, Lisa Williams, series like Medium and Ghost Whisper, movies such as Ghost, and best-selling books by the aforementioned psychic mediums, have made the subject acceptable and moved it out of the “spiritual closet.”

Linda: Athena, what motivated you to share your life story?

Athena: I had a lucid dream once of sitting at a table surrounded by spirit guides and teachers discussing with me the challenges of writing my book. This was around the time I had been introduced to Dr. Peebles in the early eighties through his medium Thomas Jacobson. I had been receiving communications after I would meditate that seemed very ethereal ... not like me. Dr. Peebles confirmed that my desire to write was the beginning of a channeling state in which I was being encouraged to write about my own growth in life and that my need was to become very public in this life. Yikes! That thought alone made me want to run to the hills to hide. Nothing quite as frightening as to hang the ‘ol butt out naked for the world to see. He told me to let it be raw and it is just that. Raw. I also knew that this is something I said I would do in this lifetime and I did not want to make my transition and look back knowing that I backed down out of fear. Another factor was that a complete stranger, a well known psychic approached me in a mall shaking a finger in my face while saying, “You need to be writing ... you could be helping millions of women.” I went home and threw caution to the wind. It was the knowing that my odyssey could be of help to others.

Linda: You and I had a number of conversations about self-publishing. Other than being able to move ahead in the publishing process and not worry about agents, advances, and other publisher problems, why did you choose to put the book out in this way?

Athena: Having worked in the film industry as long as I have I saw advantages to self-publishing for a variety of reasons. State of the art sound recording for the audio version of the book was one consideration, not giving up all the rights was another, but after some research I really didn’t see the advantage of a traditional publisher. I wanted to do my own book cover, etc. ... I am very hands on with graphics. But the bottom line ... my intuition told me to go that route.

Linda: You have a quote on the back of your book, “A spiritual odyssey that will open your heart.” How perfect a description of your book. I doubt anyone can read it without being touched deeply, not only in their heart, but in their soul. You’ve had an incredible journey all these years but it’s not over. What do you see for yourself now in these next chapters of your life?

Athena: It has only been recently that I have been able to see with greater clarity the divine purpose in sharing these experiences and how they relate to my most silent prayer ... to be an inspiration for others. I know what it feels like to be lost in the black hole. I am amazed that readers are commenting how deeply it is touching them. Joy ... that is what I see for myself in the golden years of my life ... and I am a golden girl now ... all 63 years. Speaking to larger venues ... sharing the odyssey, inspiring people to connect their inner strength to their own master within. That brings me joy and I feel such passion about it. I love the light inside of people. I just want to hear, listen and be led by spirit. How great is that?!

One last note here ... When I told Dr. Peebles I finished my manuscript he said, “One of your spirit guides just fainted and another is fanning him awake.” He also commented that they had a great debate on the spirit side whether or not I would finish the book in this life because my resistance was so strong. 70% said I would not. It only took 28 years to write! The greatest pleasure I have had is to say to my guides and teachers ... Oh ye of little faith!

Linda: Thank you, Athena. I’m sure Dr. Peebles and the “gang” are delighted you completed your book as it will inspire many, many people.

Intuitives—“a species unto themselves”

Psychiatrist and empath, Judith Orloff, M.D., states in this article at the Huffington Post:

Judge J.W. Edmonds, Famous Mediums, Part 4

Famous Mediums, Part 4

Judge John Worth Edmonds (1816-1874), a well-known lawyer, New York State Senator, Judge of the New York Supreme Court Judge and Court of Appeals, was a Spiritualist and a medium. His daughter, Laura, also had the gift of mediumship and spirit contact.

Apparently Judge Edmonds stood firm in his Spiritualist beliefs and research he did into the credibility of several other mediums, even while being attacked often in the press and in political and social circles for his beliefs . The chief communicators were alleged to be Emanuel Swedenborg and Francis Bacon. Judge Edmonds wrote the following: Letters and Tracts on Spiritualism; Spiritualism, Volume I (1853); Spiritualism, Volume II (1855); and Uncertainty of Spiritual Intercourse (1856).

Those of you who have read my blog for awhile and know of my books, will know that Dr. James Martin Peebles is my spirit guide and is the subject of two of my books, To Dance With Angels, written with my husband, Don Pendleton, and my later book, Three Principles of Angelic Wisdom.

This is an excerpt from my ebook: How Thin the Veil! 150 Years of Spiritualism, in which I quote Dr. Peebles in his earthly writings in regards to Abraham Lincoln and then Judge Edmonds.

Abraham Lincoln was regarded as a spiritualist by many and was said to have held séances in the White House and "frequently attended séances at the residence of the Lauries in Washington. The daughter was a medium." In his 1903 book, What is Spiritualism?, Dr. James Martin Peebles, M.D., recounts some of that history. "It was in this same family that Miss Nettie Colburn was entranced by spirits purporting to be Jefferson, and the fathers of our country, and who plead of President Lincoln to free those four million slaves in bondage. (See Mrs. Nettie Colburn-Maynard's work, entitled 'Abraham Lincoln, a Spiritualist.') Lincoln's emancipation message was an inspiration from the spirit world. Judge Edmonds, delivering an oration in Hope Chapel, N.Y., upon the life of Lincoln, gave the proofs of this. It is undeniable."

Though Dr. Peebles did not give us details of any of those proofs, he did give some background on Judge J. W. Edmonds. He served as an attorney in the law office of ex-President Martin Van Buren, became a New York State Senator in 1831, was appointed a Circuit Judge in 1845, was elected Judge of the (New York) Supreme Court and later, in 1851, took his seat upon the bench of the Court of Appeals. Peebles explained that Edmonds considered himself an agnostic until his wife's death in 1850 when he began experiencing her presence and on-going contact from the Other Side, until by 1851, he "became quite fully developed himself as a medium for visions, allegorical pictures, and direct communications from the spirit world written through his own hand. His daughter Laura also became a writing medium, and a trance medium with the gift of tongues. The Judge now openly avowed his Spiritualism, lectured upon it in public, wrote articles in the American and foreign press."

Peebles quotes the Judge as saying, "Spiritualism has deepened my faith in God, and the spiritual life and teachings of Christ. It has also inspired me with the most kindly Christian feelings toward all conscientious religionists of whatever name or party."

Continuing further, Dr. Peebles explains, "The pride, as he was of the New York bar for years, a jurist of unimpeachable integrity and keen discernment, as well as an authority on international law, Judge Edmonds was not only a Spiritualist, but a spiritual medium with fine clairvoyant gifts."

Judge Edmunds wrote of his daughter Laura’s mediumship and xenoglossy. On occasion, while in trance and contact with a spirit, she would bring messages forth in other languages, Greek, Spanish, and American Indian: Chippewa and Menomonie tongues.

Messages from my Angels

At times I receive messages from my angels and guides. My spirit guide, Dr. James Martin Peebles, Elizabeth, a beautiful being of Light, and the “group.” I hear their words clairaudently and each has their personality, so I am able to distinguish from whom the message comes.

Here are a few of their inspirational comments:

The Blinking Artist: Thomas Nelson

One of my Internet friends and close friend of my cousin Vivian, Terry, sent me an email tonight about the art work of his younger brother, Thomas Nelson. You really need to take a look at this and read the story of this artist.

See, what is so inspiring is that Thomas is a quadriplegic and he now draws pictures by blinking his eyes.

Talk about courage...and living life...

From his website:

Eight years ago, at 57 years old, Thomas was living the life of his dreams. But then he received devastating news that would radically alter the course of his life. He writes in his online journal:

"In 2001 I was a year into retirement and having the time of my life as a full-time working musician. Little did I suspect that fate was winding up to deliver a curve ball that caught me right squarely between the eyes.

"This particular missile came in the form of a diagnosis of ALS. I guess I'm fortunate that my version of paralysis began in my feet and worked its way up because it gave me a few extra years before my arms and hands became too weak to play."

ALS, also known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease", progressively shut down the functions of Thomas' muscles. He was forced to adapt. As a creative outlet, Thomas devised a way to draw. He uses E Z Keys scanning software, Xara Xtreme graphics editing software, and an IST switch that emulates a mouse click when he moves his cheek. Amazingly, he connects vector points and draws lines by blinking his eyes.

Coming Out of the Spiritual Closet

The pollsters' findings on people who have had contact with those on the Other Side, angels, guides, or loved ones, reflect my own independent research of the matter and my experiences with ordinary people of all walks of life. It appears many people are now very open about discussing such matters in public with little sense of embarrassment and many even seem delighted with the opportunity to do so.

So we have made gains and it may be because so much of various mystical events are now reflected in our entertainment: the books, movies, television, and that it now seems much more comfortable for discussion. People have come out of their “spiritual closet” and are ready to let the world know who they are and what they have experienced. They then discover that they are just like many others. They also discover they are far from crazy. What they have or will experience is actually a normal part of life, and is within the norm of human existence.

The more common experience related to me by others has more to do with direct contact from friends or loved ones who have passed on rather than a full blown encounter with an angelic figure. Many other experiences at first seem to involve an ordinary helping hand from a stranger at a time when it is needed most. It is only later that the recipient of the good deed begins to realize that something supernatural must have occurred.

While intuition presents itself in different ways for individual people, it is often thought to be: clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, and other types of extra-sensory perception. Yes, it is possible for Spirit to communicate in more then just one way with us! And even within a particular communication, it may be a blend of the various intuitive classifications.

Trusting Intuition

Medical doctor and intuitive, Dr. Judith Orloff and psychic intuitive Char Margolis discuss intuition with Dr. Oz.

Dr. Orloff is author of Second Sight and her latest book is Emotional Freedom. Char is an excellent psychic and her books are Questions from Earth, Answers From Heaven and Living in Spirit. She also has a long running primetime television show in The Netherlands. (I wish it was here in the USA, too).

We have to learn to trust our intuition. Char said to “OWN” your intuition and to do so with these 4 Cs:

Courage, Confidence, Commitment, to Conquer it—act upon it.

I would like to see more discussion of this by Char and Dr. Orloff.

Eileen J. Garrett, Famous Mediums, Part 3

The Irish Medium, Eileen J. Garrett (1893-1970)

Another widely respected medium, Eileen J. Garrett, a native of Ireland, was invited to the United States by the American Society for Psychical Research in 1931 to participate in paranormal research and later went to Duke University's Rhine Institute for testing in their Parapsychology Laboratory under unusually strict conditions. She scored very high on the ESP tests and while being studied for her mediumistic abilities, "she gave communications in the trance state that contained information peculiar beyond chance coincidence to a series of individuals. These, one at a time, were seated in an adjoining closed-off room, so that she never saw any of them or knew their identity." [1]

Garrett was to later establish her own Parapsychology Foundation in New York which published the International Journal of Parapsychology.

American Psychic Medium, Arthur Ford, in writing of Eileen Garrett in his 1958 autobiography, Nothing So Strange, described her as, "...one of the great mediums of all time and one of the most important people in the field of psychic research.”
